This artifact is a Mercury spacesuit boot of the type that Alan Shepard wore during America's first flight into space.  It can be seen in the photographs that the boot has suffered significant damage.  The aluminized nylon has become fairly brittle over the years.  The ankle are of the boot on both the right and left hand sides exhibits large tears of this nylon.  On the sole of the boot is an emblem with the letters "BFG" which stands for B.F. Goodrich who was the manufacturer.
