This
artifact is a flown flotation ball from the
Gemini III spacecraft.
It was sold at auction by
Superior Stamp
& Coin in their Fall 1995 Space Memorabilia Auction on October 28,
1995. This was lot number 345 in that auction.
The item description from
the auction
catalogue stated, "Flown
Titanium
Flotation Ball. A 1" ball in a 2" lucite cube, mounted diagonally on a
3" square wood plaque with a brass descriptive plate inscribed 'Tony
Broadway / Gemini - 3 Flotation Ball / Molly Brown - Virgil Grissom'.
The number '252' is marked on the ball. "
Tony Broadway was
the
proprietor of a local bar at Cape Canaveral that was frequented by the
early astronauts.
