Alan
Shepard's Freedom 7 Model

Closeup
of Capsule
|
This is a large and
solidly built model of Alan Shepard's Freedom 7 spacecraft. It
was presented to Astronaut Shepard by McDonnell Aircraft upon the
successful completion of the first manned spaceflight of the United
States.
There is a chromed presentation plaque affixed to the solid wooden
base. The plaque reads : "Al
Shepard, From 22,000 Friends At McDonnell Aircraft Who Were With Him In
Spirit During the Free World's 1st Manned Spaceflight 5 May 1961"
Before his passing in 1998, Astronaut Shepard donated this model and
his Apollo 14 Lunar Module model to the Astronaut Scholarship
Foundation. He left specific instructions that these models
should be used to raise funds for the foundation.
The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation placed this model up for auction
at the Sims-Hankow autograph show in Washington, DC in May of 2003.
This artifact was acquired by the Earth To The Moon Air & Space
Museum from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation auction. |
