This package of
dehydrated chicken and gravy was flown to the Moon on Apollo 8.
It was sold at auction by Superior Galleries in their Fall, 1993 Space
Memorabilia Auction. This was lot number 680 in Session Two
in that auction. Session Two was conducted on November 16th
of 1993.
The lot description
from
the auction catalog stated, "680.
Flown Freeze-Dried Food. 2 x 3 1/2" unopened plastic pouch of chicken
and gravy, with blue velcro tab on back. This sample of the
astronauts' freeze-dried diet gives some indication of the cuisine of
the lunar program."
The
Earth To The Moon Air
&
Space Museum obtained this artifact from
that auction.
After the auction an inquiry was made to the auction house to ask who
consigned this lot. On December 15, 1993 a letter was sent to me
by Alan Lipkin of Superior Galleries. That letter stated,
"Thank you for your letter. We very
much appreciate your participation in the Space Memorabilia
Auction.
In answer to your question, lot number 680, the
dehydrated chicken and gravy, were consigned by a engineer from a NASA
contractor who had worked with the Apollo program and who consigned
many documented lots. Due to contractual confidentiality
requirements, we are unable to disclose his name or the company he
worked for.
As always, we stand behind every item we sell, and
the documentation provided to us more than satisfies our requirements
for authenticity and provenance.
Sincerely yours,
Alan Lipkin
