Apollo
7 Flown Turtle Flag From Wally Schirra
|
This flag and pin
flew with Apollo 7 Commander Wally Schirra during the Apollo 7 mission.
This multicolored flag and turtle pin are official symbols of the
infamous "Turtles
Club".
The turtle pin appears a little worse for wear. He seems to be
missing one of his legs. Perhaps, he lost this limb through some
altercation with another turtle after a few too many libations.
This flown flag and pin was part of the Wally Shirra collection.
Mr. Schirra consigned these artifacts for auction with Odyssey
Auctions. This was lot number 71 in their Space And Aviation Autographs and
Memorabilia Auction which occured on March 26th, 1995.
The description
from the auction cataolog stated, "71.
Flown Turtles Flag and Pin. A nice multi-colored 'Turtles' flag
flown by Wally Schirra on Apollo VII."
The Earth To The Moon Air
& Space Museum acquired this artifact from the Odyssey auction.
Later, the Earth To The Moon Air And Space Museum obtained a type
written statement that was hand signed by Astronaut Schirra
attesting
to the authenticity of this artifact. |
