This
artifact is a gold plated medallion that was
produced for the anticipated flight of Apollo 1.
This Apollo 1 crew had intended to fly these
medallions as souvenirs on their mission before
tragedy struck.
This gold plated medallion in its original
Fliteline case consigned in the Superior
Galleries Spring 2001 Space & Aviation
Memorabilia Auction by the estate of Astronaut
Edward H. White, II. This was lot number
584 in that auction.
The item description from auction catalog
stated, "584
"Gold Plated" Sterling Silver 32 mm Medallion
(unnumbered) as prepared for the Apollo 1
flight in its original Fliteline case.
Similar lot. Ex - The Ed White
Estate Collection."
The similar lot that this description referred
to was lot number 582 which had a somewhat
expanded description. That description
stated, "582.
"Gold Plated" Sterling Silver 32 mm Medallion
(unnumbered) as prepared for the Apollo 1
flight in its original Fliteline plastic
case. It is not engraved on the reverse
for obvious reasons. Gold plated
medallions were only carried for the
astronauts wives and are the scarcest of the
flown medallions. Only about 50 of these
medallions (both gold and silver) exist.
Ex - The Ed
White Estate Collection."
The Earth To The Moon Air & Space Museum
acquired this artifact from the Superior
Galleries auction. |
