Irwin's Apollo 15 Flown Silver Snoopy
|
Manned
Flight Awareness Card
|
The Charles Schulz
cartoon character "Snoopy" was adopted by the Manned Fight
Awareness program as its official mascot.
The program was conceived to promote safety conscientiousness among
people working on the space program. Also illustrated here is one
of many slogans that was produced by the Manned Flight Awareness
campaign. This was distributed on 8 by 10 inch card stock.
Note that Snoopy, the safety mascot, is featured prominently.
As recognition of exemplary behavior in this program, the astronauts
would award flown silver Snoopy pins to selected workers after their
mission.
This particular silver Snoopy pin flew to the Moon on Apollo 15.
After the flight it remained in the collection of Astronaut James Irwin.
On March 26, 1995, Odyssey Auctions auctioned this artifact on behalf
of the estate of Apollo 15 Lunar Module Pilot James Irwin. The
pin was lot number 173 in the auction. The catalog description
from that auction stated, "173.
Snoopy Pin Flown to the Moon by Jim Irwin. A great pin depicting
a space-suited Snoopy which was flown to the lunar surface by James
Irwin on Apollo XV."
The
Earth To The Moon Air & Space Museum acquired this artifact in the
Odyssey auction. |
