This
artifact is a model of the Apollo 14 Lunar Module Antares. It was
presented to Apollo 14 Commander Alan Shepard in 1971 by Grumman
Aerospace Corporation upon the successful completion of the mission to
Fra Mauro.
The high quality model is constructed of aluminum. It is placed
on a wooden base with a presentation plaque that reads: "Presented to
Captain Alan B. Shepard, USN, Commander Apollo 14 By Grumman Aerospace
Corporation. Also affixed to the wooden base is a mission patch
from the Apollo 14 mission.
Before his passing, Astronaut Shepard gifted this model to the
Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. He left specific instructions
that it should be sold to raise funds for the foundation. The
foundation placed the model up for auction at their annual fund raising
auction in New Jersey on August 14, 2005.
The Earth To The Moon Air & Space Museum
acquired this artifact from the ASF auction. |
