26: Several astronauts
appeared at an autograph show in Houston, Texas. My wife Mary and

February 3: The New England
Patriots defeat the Saint Louis Rams, 20-17
in Super Bowl XXXVI.
February 17: Ward Burton wins
the Daytona 500.
March 24: Brian Grazer and Ron Howard's movie "A
Beautiful Mind" wins the Oscar for Best Picture.
May 19: Historian and Author Walter Lord passes
away at the age of 84. Lord is best remembered for his chronicle
of the sinking of the Titanic in the book "A Night To Remember".
May 25: Helio Castroneves wins
the
Indianapolis 500.
June 12: The Los Angelus Lakers defeat the New
Jersey Nets by a total of 4 games to 0 to win the 2002 NBA Championship.
September 30: My friend Tom Celentano and I are in
Florida for the launch of STS-112. We are VIP guests of NASA's
deputy director Fred Gregory. The launche is delayed until
October 7, 2002, but we are given a marvelous VIP tour of the
Kennedy Space Center. For my account of this tour, please

October 7: NASA
launches space shuttle Atlantis on a 10 day mission the International
Space Station. This flight delivered the S1 truss segment.
The crew of Atlantis was Jeffrey Ashby, Pamela Melroy, Sandra Mangus,
Piers Sellers, David Wolf, and Fyodor Yurchikhin.
October 18: Space
shuttle Atlantis returns to Earth after the successful completion of
its mssion to the International Space Station. Atlantis lands at
Runway 33 at the Kennedy Space Center.
October 27: The Anaheim Angels defeat the San
Francisco Giants 4 games to 3 to win the 2002 Baseball World Series.
