January 7: One of the worst blizzards in American history hits the Eastern states.  Over 100 deaths result from this storm.

January 20: STS-72 completes a successful mission with a landing at the Kennedy Space Center In Florida.  For my eyewitness account of the reentry as viewed in central Texas, follow the STS-72 event link.

January 28: The Dallas Cowboys football team defeats the Pittsburgh Steelers for their fifth Super Bowl victory in Super Bowl XXX.

March 22: NASA launches space shuttle Endeavour on the STS-76 mission.  For my first hand account of the launch follow the STS-76 link.

March 27: A Delta rocket successfully launches a global positioning satellite, GPS-7, from Cape Canaveral Air Station.  For a detailed account of this unmanned launch follow the Delta GPS-7 link.

March 25: The Best Picture Oscar is awarded to "Braveheart" at the Academy Awards ceremony.  "Apollo 13" wins the Oscars for Best Sound and Best Film Editing.

April 3: Theodore Kaczynski is arrested at his Montana cabin as the suspected "Unabomber".

April 28: US President Bill Clinton gives a four and one half hour videotaped testimony in his defense during an investigation into the Whitewater scandal.

May 11: ValuJet flight 592 crashes in the Florida Everglades killing all 110 on board.

May 26: Buddy Lazier wins the Indianapolis 500.


July 17: TWA flight 800 explodes in the air off the coast of Long Island, New York killing all 230 on board.

June 25:  Khobar Towers bombing in Saudi Arabia leaves 19 US servicemen dead.

August 6: NASA announces that Martian meteorite ALH84001 contains evidence of primitive life on the planet Mars.

August 28:  Prince Charles of Great Britain is divorced from his wife Princess Diana.
 
November 7:  NASA launches the Mars Global Surveyor probe.
 

November 24:
  Rusty Wallace wins the Suzuka 100.  It is the first NASCAR race ever held in Japan.

December 12:  Uday Hussein is seriously injured in an assassination attempt.


December 13:  Kofi Annan is elected Secretary-General of the United Nations.
