1992 World Events



January 22: NASA launches space shuttle Discovery on mission STS-42.

January 26: The Washington Redskins football team defeats the Buffalo Bills by a score of 37-24 in Super Bowl XXVI.

January 30: Space shuttle Discovery lands after completing mission STS-42.


February 17: Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer is sentenced to life in prison.

March 17:  Russia launches Soyuz TM-14 with crew Aleksandr Viktorenko, Aleksandr Kaleri, and Klaus-Deitrich Flade.  This is the first manned Soyuz launch after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

March 24: NASA launches space shuttle Atlantis on mission STS-45.

March 25: Soyuz spacecraft TM-13 returns to Earth with crew, Aleksandr Volkov, Sergey Krikalev, and Klaus-Deitrich Flade.  Krikalev has been in space for 10 months spanning the collapse of the Soviet Union.  He left Earth as a citizen of the Soviet Union and returned to Earth as a citizen of Russia.

April 2: Space shuttle Atlantis returns to Earth after the completion of mission STS-45.


May 1: Oakland Athletics baseball player Ricky Henderson steals his 1000th base.

May 7: NASA launches space shuttle Endeavour on mission STS-49.  This is the maiden voyage for Endeavour.

May 25: The Doug Sanders Celebrity Pro-Am Golf Tournament was held in Houston, Texas.  Neil Armstrong and Alan Shepard participated.  For my account of this tournament follow the Doug Sanders link.

May 16: Space shuttle Endeavour lands after the completion of mission STS-49.

May 22: Johnny Carson hosts the "Tonight Show" for the last time.  His career on that show spanned 30 years.


June 25:
NASA launches space shuttle Columbia on mission STS-50.

October 25: The Spaceweek 1992 National Banquet was held in Houston, Texas.  I had dinner with Bruce McCandless.  For my account of this event follow the Spaceweek 92 link.


July 27: Russia launches Soyuz TM-15 with a crew of Anatoli Solovyov, Sergey Avdeyev, and Michel Tognini.

July 9: Space shuttle Columbia returns to Earth after the completion of mission STS-50.


July 31: NASA launches space shuttle Atlantis on mission STS-46.

August 8: Space shuttle Atlantis returns to Earth after the completion of mission STS-46.


August 10: Soyuz spacecraft TM-14 returns to Earth with crew Aleksandr Viktorenko, Aleksandr Kaleri, and Michel Tognini.


August 24:
Hurricane Andrew hits South Florida.

September 12: NASA launches space shuttle Endeavour on mission STS-47.   Mae Jemison becomes the first African-American woman in space.

September 20: Space shuttle Endeavour returns to Earth after the completion of mission STS-47.

October 22: NASA launches space shuttle Columbia on mission STS-52.


October 24:
Mary and I are married.

November 1: Space shuttle Columbia returns to Earth after the completion of mission STS-52.


November 3: Bill Clinton defeats incumbent George H. W. Bush and Ross Perot in the US presidential election.

November 25: The Czechoslovakia Federal Assembly votes to split the nation into two nations, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.  This will occur on January 1, 1993.

December 2: NASA launches space shuttle Discovery on mission STS-53.

December 9: Space shuttle Discovery lands at Edwards Air Force Base after the completion of mission STS-53.

December 9: US Marines under order of George H. W. Bush land in Somalia.
